The Oaks Fire Trail, Blue Mountains.

There are a few variation of the Oaks fire trail in the Blue Mountains. The most popular ride is to start at Woodford station, then ride the Oaks fire trail to Glenbrook station. For the train time table go to the link below as the trains run about an hour apart:

Going in this direction is the less of the two evils as you have a lot more downhill runs. Having said that you’ll still be required to go up some hills in this direction for the first 12km’s, just not as many. After the 12km mark it is smooth sailing for the next 12km. It’s a gradually down hill run from there. You descend around 500m. Some bits are steep and I was going over the 50km mark at times, so you need to have your wits about you in some sections as there are a few sharp corners. But the Oaks fire trail is extremely well maintained, well it was when I did it (2016). So would suit beginners, just control your speed.

When you get to a locked gate gate after a great downhill, on the left hand side is the Oaks single track. This is excellent fun and you avoid the cars on this section of the oaks fire trail.

Towards the end start to pay for the great down hill run. It’s a bit of a slog up to Greenbrook station. But you should have plenty left in the tank to get up that hill.

All up this route is approximately a 28km ride.

Another option is to enter the Blue Mountains National Park at Glenbrook. You can loop around various tracks and see some of the sights such as:

    • Nepean lookout. Great views of Nepean River.
    • Euroka clearing. Big chance of seeing wild kangaroo’s.
    • St Helena Track, very technical.
    • Pisgah Ridge Firetrail. More views of Nepean river.
    • Red Hands Firetrail. Chain your bike up, go for a short walk and check out the Aboriginal Hand Paintings.
    • Tunnel view lookout.

So plenty to do and see. Have fun and enjoy the day.

  • Below is a clip of my ride on the Oaks Fire Trail in the Blue mountains. It was raining that day so there’s a few water blotches on the lens. But still watchable:

  • Directions to Oaks Fire Trail

Google Map Link. Park at Glenbrook station car park. Then catch the train up to Woodford station. Then just ride your way back to Glenbrook.
